St. Mary's College of Maryland inducts 29 into Phi Beta Kappa's Zeta Chapter of Maryland.
On Friday, April 5, twenty-nine St. Mary's College of Maryland students were inducted into Phi Beta Kappa's Zeta Chapter of Maryland. The ceremony took place in the Nancy R. and Norton T. Dodge Performing Arts Center on the college campus. Twenty-six seniors and three juniors were inducted into Phi Beta Kappa, the nation's oldest academic honor society. The society's founding dates to 1776. The Zeta Chapter at St. Mary's College was approved in 1997, after a rigorous three-year review by the national organization.

One member of the St. Mary's College faculty -- Asif Ud Dowla -- was inducted as an honorary member. The ceremony took place at the reconstructed State House of 1676 in Historic St. Mary's City. Twenty-two seniors and two juniors were inducted into Phi Beta Kappa, the nation's oldest academic honor society. The society's founding dates to 1776. The Zeta Chapter at St. Mary's College was approved in 1997, after a rigorous three-year review by the national organization.

Sophomore Madeleine Blaisdell (Bethesda, Md./Walt Whitman) was named the St. Mary's College of Maryland Seahawk of the Month for the month of October. The Department of Athletics & Recreation executive team selects the Seahawk of the Month award recipient each month.

Assistant Professor Freedman and Alumni Published in Scholarship of Teaching and Learning in Psychology
Assistant Professor of Psychology Gili Freedman recently published an article entitled, "Applying Social Psychology to a Global Crisis: Student Engagement in a Laboratory Class During the COVID-19 Pandemic," in the journal Scholarship of Teaching and Learning in Psychology. This pedagogical paper describes a project from Freedman's spring 2020 Advanced Social Psychology with Lab course and was written with two of the students in that class, India Oates '21 and Shannon Kirk '21.

St. Mary's College of Maryland's "Through the Lens" Exhibition to run Dec. 18 - Jan. 31 at Lexington Park Library
A photography mentorship program, the "Through the Lens" exhibition was launched in recognition of the increasing urgency to address equity issues, and to give voice to underrepresented communities. The exhibition is sponsored by St. Mary's College's division of Inclusive Diversity, Equity, Access and Accountability (IDEAA) and Department of Art and Art History, along with St. Mary's County Arts Council and Community Bank of Chesapeake. This free-to-participate program was a hands-on learning opportunity for underrepresented youths ages 16-18 (grades 10-12), led by St. Mary's College students. Participants reflected on their communities and voiced their concerns through photography, also known as the photovoice method. They learned to master the use of professional photography equipment, had the opportunity to display their works in an exhibition, and a chance to earn two college credits upon the successful completion of the program.

St. Mary's College Alumni Rustin Pare and Mira Willson Present at Conference/ Pare Wins Best Undergraduate Presentation Award
St. Mary's College of Maryland Alumni Rustin Pare '21 and Mira Willson '21 presented during the joint annual meeting of the American Ornithological Society and Society of Canadian Ornithologists, August 9-13, with Pare winning the Best Undergraduate Presentation Award. Both presentations were based on the St. Mary's Project research they did while students with Professor of Biology J. Jordan Price.

St. Mary's College Students Present Research During Annual St. Mary's Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) program
On July 2, St. Mary's College of Maryland held its annual St. Mary's Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) program, which provides students opportunities to engage deeply in independent research, laboratory, and creative work across disciplines, under the guidance and with the expertise of faculty mentors. Assistant Professor of Chemistry Troy Townsend and Assistant Professor of Spanish Argelia Gonzalez Hurtado served as co-directors for the program. SURF is a selective eight-week annual summer program at St. Mary's College, where students from intentionally varied disciplines engage in directed research or creative work. While working full-time on their projects, students also participate in workshops and group meetings to sharpen their professional skills.

St. Mary's Scholars are juniors and seniors who have earned at least 32 credit-hours at St. Mary's College and whose cumulative grade-point average is 3.50 or better. St. Mary's Scholars are determined once a year at the end of the spring semester.

St. Mary's College Anthropology, Environmental Studies, and Marine Science Programs Featured at Conference on Climate Change and Maritime Heritage
St. Mary's College of Maryland Adjunct Professor Susan Langley is the Maryland State Underwater Archaeologist and a member of both the anthropology and new marine science programs. SMCM student McKenna Litynski '21 (environmental studies) organized the video conference as an Independent Study Course under the supervision of Langley. Taking place April 5 - 6, the conference is titled Climate Change and Maritime Heritage: Interdisciplinary Perspectives.

This year, the Society for Applied Anthropology (SfAA) is hosting a virtual annual conference and St. Mary's College is participating at many levels. Professor of Anthropology Bill Roberts serves on the 2021 Program Committee and took the lead on organizing three sessions involving SMCM faculty, students, and alumni.

St. Mary's College of Maryland Psychology Students, Alumni and Professors Present at Society for Personality and Social Psychology Conference
St. Mary's College of Maryland students Katie Agate '21, Mason Drusano '22, Janna Mawuli '22, Sonder Van Wert '23, alumni Ceara Daugherty '20, Anna Moorehead '20, and assistant professors of psychology Gili Freedman and Kristina Howansky presented virtual posters at the 22nd Annual Meeting of the Society for Personality and Social Psychology (SPSP) conference in mid-February 2021. Agate, Drusano, Freedman and their collaborators presented "Ghosting in the Time of COVID." This work examined whether the COVID-19 pandemic has changed attitudes toward ghosting. In an exploratory study (N = 733) examining how attitudes toward ghosting have changed due to the pandemic, over half of participants reported the pandemic has influenced their feelings-with a majority reporting more negative feelings about ghosting. Participants who felt more threatened by COVID-19 also felt more negatively about individuals who ghost.
