St. Mary's College of Maryland Grad Griffin Canfield Named a Fulbright Scholar

2014 May 21

St. Mary's College of Maryland Class of 2014 graduate Griffin Canfield has been named a Fulbright Scholar. Canfield will travel to the Czech Republic in the fall 2014 and will work as an English teaching assistant. A native of Waldorf, Md., Canfield majored in political science at St. Mary's College.

Sponsored by the U.S. Department of State's Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, the Fulbright U.S. Student Program offers grants to qualifying graduating seniors and recent bachelor's degree graduates for research projects and English teaching assistant programs in countries outside the U.S. for one academic year.

On being named a finalist for the scholarship, Canfield said, "Choosing to attend St. Mary's College was the best decision I could have made. The small class sizes, exceptional faculty and staff, and beautiful location have made for a great college experience. Looking back over the last four years, there are a lot of people from the St. Mary's community who helped me reach this point."

The Fulbright U.S. Student Program is a highly competitive scholarship program; only about eighteen percent of all applicants are awarded as Fulbright Scholars.

St. Mary's College of Maryland, designated the Maryland state honors college in 1992, is ranked one of the best public liberal arts schools in the nation by U.S. News and World Report. More than 1,800 students attend the college, nestled on the St. Mary's River in Southern Maryland.
