Carly Legg of Stevensville Graduates from St. Mary's College of Maryland Master of Arts in Teaching Program

St. Mary's College of Maryland announces that Carly Legg of Stevensville, MD graduated the Master of Arts in Teaching Program. She received the Natalie Parran and Ben Parran Award.

St. Mary's College of Maryland graduated 28 students with the degree of Master of Arts in Teaching on Saturday, June 1. The commencement address was delivered by Maryland Secretary of Higher Education Danette Gerald Howard.

President Joseph Urgo advised the MAT class of 2013 to "remember this experience for a lifetime" and to "reflect on the ideals that can be drawn from it, all of your lives, in any circumstance, at any time or place, as you seek to lead responsible, meaningful, and effective lives."

Director of Teacher Education Lois Stover charged the graduating class to "be good keepers of the faith of the power of education to transform. ... Share your passion for learning, your passion for sustaining this earth, for the arts, for history, literature, the beauty of mathematics, the power of scientific inquiry, for diversity of all sorts."

The Master of Arts in Teaching degree at St. Mary's College is a full-time, year-long program. Certification programs exist for elementary certification in grades one through six, and secondary English math, social studies, biology, chemistry, physics, and theater for grades seven through twelve. Art, music, and foreign language majors may also certify in their disciplines for grades preK-12. It is also possible for an individual to add certification in early childhood education to the elementary certificate.
